The Philippines breaks its 1,000 average daily coronavirus cases as it records 2,122 new coronavirus cases on Friday.

The DOH said that the areas with the highest number of new cases are Quezon City with 160, Rizal with 105, Bulacan with 91, Makati City with 83, and Davao City with 79.

Some 78 more patients have also recovered from the illness, bringing the total to 420,666.

The new death toll is now at 8,875 with 25 new deaths.

The Department of Health (DOH) and the OCTA Research Team are sounding the alarm on a possible surge of coronavirus cases in the country after the holiday season.

“The likelihood of this surge in the Philippines in the coming holidays is very likely. And we should take this threat very seriously and act immediately to avoid this from happening,” DOH spokesperson Maria Rosario Vergeire said in a briefing.

Without aggressive efforts to halt the transmission, Vergeire said the COVID-19 cases in the National Capital Region (NCR) may reach 4,000 new cases daily.
