Senate President Tito Sotto thumbs down the proposal to conduct ‘mail-in’ voting in the Philippines in the upcoming 2022 national elections.

The electoral system gained popularity in the United States since it defined the victory of President-elect Joe Biden.

Biden won after mail-in ballots were counted with his supporters choosing to do this type of voting to protect themselves from the coronavirus disease.

U.S. President Donald Trump slammed the idea of mail-in voting because his supporters showed up during the election day in poll precincts.

“I’m not in favor. It’s the easiest system of voting to cheat,” Sotto said.

“Sino tatanggap? Nationwide? Saan padadala, post office? Kailan bibilangin? Sino bibilang? Paano kung may mag-leak ng results whether true or fake? Any of those procedures can be cheated,” he added.

Senator Imee Marcos said that the ‘mail-in’ system is being practiced in the Philippines for overseas Filipinos through the absentee voting.

She is now proposing to allow postal voting for senior citizens, pregnant women, persons with disabilities and indigenous people.

“We should explore all possible scenarios: the 3-day in-person recommendation of Comelec, expanded early voting, mail-in ballots and even in select cases, livestream online voting,” she said in September.

“No doubt there are issues with every mode of voting, but the voice of the people must be heard,” she added.
