Over 900,000 hens will soon be slaughtered at a farm in western Poland to avoid the spread of bird flu in the country.

The H5N8 bird flu outbreak was discovered Tuesday, November 24 at the village of Wroniawy which was the 33rd outbreak reported in Poland this 2020, as per reports from state news agency PAP.

“It is a farm of 930,000 laying hens. … A canal runs behind the farm, there are also fields nearby, with geese and other wild birds,” PAP quoted local veterinary authorities as saying.

The report furthered that the culling will begin on Thursday, November 26 and may extend up to six days.

Animal-to-human transmission is considered low, however – past outbreaks require culling hundreds of thousands of chickens to contain the outbreak.
