French President Emmanuel Macron has tested positive for the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) after experiencing symptoms of the virus, as confirmed by his office on Thursday, December 17.

A statement from the Elysee Palace stated that the 42-year-old president will now underg self-isolation for one week after he got tested at the “onset of the first symptoms”.

“In accordance with current health regulations applicable to all, the President of the Republic will isolate himself for 7 days. He continues to work and carry out his activities remotely,” read the statement.

Prior to his diagnosis, Macron met with several other European leaders in the past weeks, who have since announced that they too would be on quarantine after Macron tested positive, including European Council President Charles Michel and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez.

Macron is now the latest world leader to test positive for COVID-19, following US President Donald Trump and UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson.
