The Kilauea volcano on Hawaii’s Big Island has erupted, as per reports from the US Geological Survey (USGS).

USGS stated that the eruption began late on Sunday, December 20 around 9:30 pm local time within the Halema’uma’u crater.

“An eruption has commenced within Kīlauea’s summit caldera. The situation is rapidly evolving and HVO will issue another statement when more information is available,” as per the latest update from the USGS.

The Kilauea volcano last erupted in 2018.

The USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO) has elevated the volcano alert level to WARNING and has heightened its aviation color code to RED, as per reports from The Independent.
