A 76-year-old woman was shot dead Friday night by her own husband, who mistook her for a thief, in Kabankalan City, Negros Occidental.

The 80-year-old suspect, according to Manila Bulletin, was awakened by the barking of dogs and noticed a shadow of a person lurking inside their house.

He fired a shot. But upon turning on the lights, he was shocked to find out that he killed his own wife.

According to the family, the elderly man thought that his spouse was beside him when he got up from their bed.

He remains at large after fleeing from the scene.

An identified firearm was found at a nearbly sugarcane field.

The family members have no intention to press any charges against him.
