President Rodrigo Duterte has declined any possibility of extending his term, even if the House of Representatives moves forward in changing the constitution.
Despite lawmakers insisting that they only want to change the economic provisions of the charter, the move to amend the constitution draws criticisms since it will also open the possibility of removing term limits or extension.
In a speech on Thursday, Duterte slammed critics for saying that he is eyeing to stay in power beyond 2022.
“They thought that is what I am asking from Congress, they thought it was a term extension. My God, even if you give it in a silver platter… even if you give it to me free for another 10 years, I will tell you, I’m done,” Duterte said.
The President also said that he discouraged his daughter, Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte for running in the 2022 polls.
“And my daughter, they are prodding her to run. I told them: ‘My daughter is not running’. I have told Inday not to run. It’s not for a woman,” the President said.
The President hopes that his successor will be able to eliminate corruption in the government.
“I hope the next president would be as forceful and resolute to confront this almost evil practice of people going around the country, looking for bidding, and they will divide the kickbacks,” Duterte said. (TDT)
