The Department of Health (DOH) said the Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW) who tested positive for the UK COVID-19 variant in Hong Kong after a trip from Manila is now considered ‘case closed’.

This, after her contacts in the Philippines tested negative for the more transmissible variant.

The DOH said they are still unsure where the Filipina got the UK variant, since they were not able to test all her co-passengers for the new variant.

Last January 6, the Hong Kong health authorities detected the presence of the new coronavirus variant, first reported in the United Kingdom, from a passenger who arrived from Manila last December 22.

Hong Kong health officials said that they have detected four new cases of the UK variant during that time and one of them is from Manila who arrived via PR 300. The patient is tagged as case 9003.

“9003 took PR 300 and arrived in Hong Kong on the 22nd of December from the Philippines,” Chuang Shuk-kwan, head of the communicable disease branch of Hong Kong’s health department said.
