A Sriwijaya Air aircraft carrying 62 people on board crashed into the sea on Saturday shortly after taking off from Indonesia’s capital Jakarta.

The head of Indonesia’s National Transportation Safety Committee, Suryanto Cahyono said Sriwijaya Air Flight 182 from Jakarta to Pontianak lost contact at 2:40 p.m on Saturday.

The plane was believed to have crashed in the islands of Laki and Lancang in Thousands Islands chain of Jakarta.

Maj. Gen Bambang Suryo Aji of Basarnas, Indonesia’s national search and rescue agency, said rescue operations are still ongoing.

On Sunday, Jakarta police spokesperson said: “As of this morning, we’ve received two (body) bags, one with passenger belongings and the other with body parts.”

A total of 28 ships, five helicopters and two airplanes are taking part in the search and the Indonesian Navy has confirmed that debris has been found in the island.

Sriwijaya Airlines CEO Jefferson Irwin Jauwena said the plane was in good condition before it took off.

In a report on CNN, three fishermen in Lancang island said that they heard a bomb or a big thunder and then they saw big waves to their boat.

The men said they didn’t see a plane crash into the sea, but smelled fuel and spotted debris.

The Boeing 737-500 plane carried 43 adults, 7 children and 12 crew members.
