Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) could decline the IQ of victims by 8.5 points, as well worsen their mental capacity equivalent to the brain ageing by 10 years, according to a study.

In the Great British Intelligence Test research done on 84, 285 people by expert from Imperial College London, the University of Cambridge, King’s College London and the University of Chicago, it showed that the disease is linked to cognitive decline among patients who have recovered—particularly those with severe symptoms.

“What we can see in the results is that people who suspected they had Covid-19 performed less well than we would expect,” Neuroscientist Dr Adam Hampshire from Imperial College London and lead author of the study told the BBC.

“This underperformance is greater for people who were more ill, particularly those who went to hospital, ended up in critical care or on a ventilator. It’s also greater for people who actually had a biological test, so who we know were definitely unwell with COVID-19,” he added.

Among the cognitive tests done on these participants include remembering words or joining dots on a puzzle. The study, however, has not yet been peer-reviewed and did not compare “before and after” scores of the participants. It also included those who have not officially been declared positive for COVID-19.
